Changing your
air filter is one of the routine maintenance procedures
you should be able to complete yourself. An air filter
clogged with dirt will not only rob you of useful horsepower
but will also decrease your gas mileage by a large margin.
These instructions will show you how to change your air
filter with a simple drop in replacement or a higher flow
K&N type filter for increased performance. |

Tools and Materials: |
| 1) BMW Air Filter
for E46 (Part# 13-72-1-744-869) or Aftermarket
Filter

| Instructions |
1. Locate
the air filter housing in the engine bay. The air filter
housing is held shut by five clips. Disconnect all five
clips. |
| |
|
| 2. Clip number one. |
| |
|
|
| 3. Clip number two. |
|
|
| 4. Clip number three. |
|
|
| 5. Clip number four. |
|
|
| 6. Clip number five. I used the lug nut
wrench from the toolkit in the trunk to release this clip.
The lug nut wrench is bent at just the right angle to
get underneath the clip. |
|
|
| 7. Gently lift the top off of the air filter
housing. You will see the old air filter inside. |
|
|
| 8. Remove the old air filter and replace
it with your new air filter. Make sure that the new air
filter is installed correctly. The rubber edges of the
air filter will sit perfectly flush inside the airbox.
|
|
|
| 9. Place the top of the air filter housing
back down on top of the air filter. Notice that the top
of the air filter housing has grooves along the edges
for the rubber edges of the air filter. Everything should
fit together very snugly. Re-engage the five clips you
released in the previous steps. You can use the lug nut
wrench again for clip number five, it makes life a lot
easier. You're done! |
